Due Dates
A series of dates spaced intermittently throughout the semester designed to increase stress levels and induce bouts of short term amnesia. Due date related stress can be momentarily relieved via extentions.

Also known as 'dead lines' - 'dead' for how you feel after you have (tried to) meet them and 'lines' for what you need to do in order to make the attempt in the first place.
That's bang on.
There is of course the sense of achievement that comes from handing in a peice of work.
