You've got to be careful about those ones that don't have a participation/attendance mark.
I've got one at the moment where there are no marks awarded for attendance, you just have to turn up or you fail.
I had one subject where the lecuturer/tutor never took attendance, so us students just stopped showing up. We figured it must be optional if the bloke doesn't do role call, right? Yeah, wrong. He got us slackers back big-time. Seventy-five percent of the end of semester multiple choice exam addressed exact quotes and meaningless details of characters that were in the videos that he showed in tutes. i.e. " In the video, 'Understanding Jung', Frank said he was as smart as, (a) Tom, (b) Dick, (c) Harry, (d) None of the above". Like really, it was completely non-related to lecture material and no-one would have known these obscure little details unless they had come to class.
Needless to say, people walked out of the exam with ashen looks on their faces. We probably all had cause to complain, but no-one wanted to make an admission that they had never bothered turning up to class!
